Mark up a pdf in Google Docs
I had to figure this out to show installation locations on a client's floor plans. I wanted to use Google Docs because it's the easiest way for everyone to access drawings and diagrams, but it won't directly import a .pdf, either as an image or as a background.
But if you add one extra step, you can get there - just be aware, Google Drawings still doesn't have a 'crop' option for imported images.
1. Check Google Docs 'Convert uploaded files to Google Docs format'
- optionally convert text but not if you want it IN the drawing
2. 'Upload' in Google Docs and select the .pdf, which will create a document
3. Open the new Doc and select the drawing (if there was text converted, that might be separated out)
4. Use Ctrl-C or the browser's 'Edit/Copy', other Copy commands like right click or Ctrl-Insert won't work
5. Create a new Google Docs 'Drawing'
5. Create a new Google Docs 'Drawing'
6. Paste (Ctrl-V) the image from the pdf into the drawing and save, then do whatever you need to mark it up.
Now you can save it as a Google Docs Drawing or export it as a .png, .jpg, .svg or even as a .pdf.
One suggestion if you need to rotate the image - use 'Arrange/Rotate' instead of the mouse control if you need 90*/180*/270* as the mouse control is far less accurate.
